Porcelain Installation Guide

What is Porcelain?

PORCELAIN PAVING IS FORMED BY BAKING A MIXTURE OF CLAY, SAND, AND OTHER MINERALS IN A HIGH-TEMPERATURE KILN PRODUCING AN INCREDIBLY DURABLE AND NON-POROUS MATERIAL.

Being resistant to water absorption ensures that porcelain paving requires very little maintenance. There’s no need to apply a sealant as the pavers are already stain and mildew-resistant. Liquids such as oils and chemicals cannot penetrate the surface so can simply be wiped away and any fungus growth is mitigated.

Porcelain is an exceptionally dense material and is therefore hard-wearing. Consistently accurate sizes allow porcelain paving to be laid with thin joints that create that desirable modern appearance to your garden and the intentionally varied finishes, combined with subtle color and surface variations, further enhance its individuality. Smoothersurfaced matching versions allow you to use this paving indoors meaning you can create a harmonious flow from internal rooms such as the conservatory or kitchen to your outdoor patio.

Laying & Design Information

Designing outdoor spaces, if done correctly, can give an elegant uplift to your home and make it look more spacious and stylish. Installations done after proper planning can set your outdoor space apart from the rest and make it look absolutely stunning! These tiles are immune to harsh weather conditions and have a high physical strength. We aim to provide you with a lavish and spectacular patio.

Laying Notes

As with all paving, it is important to mix the tiles from each pack to be used during installation. This will help to even out the colour and any slight shade differences. It is also recommended to use a slurry primer to the underside of each paving tile. This is because the porcelain is a very dense material, and this will help the adhesion with the mortar used to secure it to the compacted stone sub base. The alternative being a preparatory tile adhesive for use externally to a pre screeded concrete sub base. It is normal to lay the tiles with a flexible grout of approx 5mm.

Technical Performance

  • All tiles comply to R11 slip resistance [tested under DIN EN10545] in both wet and dry conditions.
  • All tiles have a high resistance to staining and normal house hold chemicals, but regular care and maintenance is recommended for surface grime, dirt and algae.
  • Tolerances of Length, Width and Thickness. Tile thickness variation is approx +0.5% to -0.5% of total Thickness.
  • All tiles are vitrified with full body colour. Vitrified porcelain paving is a type of tile which is made from extremely pure kaolin clays and minerals such as quartz and feldspar, which is then fired at 1200 degrees Celsius, making it harder, extremely durable and giving it an extremely low water absorption rate of less than 0.5%.
